Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index

Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index

The PSQI is a standardized tool developed to assess sleep quality and disturbances over a 1-month time interval.

It consists of 19 individual items, creating 7 components that produce one global score. Scores range from 0 to 21, where lower scores denote a healthier sleep quality.

This page applies the published scoring guidance for self-assessment; it does not validate a diagnosis, treatment effect, or individual health status.

Tool guide

Understand a PSQI sleep self-assessment

Use the questionnaire to calculate sleep-related component scores and a total for organizing recent subjective sleep experiences.

How to use

  1. Complete the questions and review uncertain recollections.
  2. Read component and total scores alongside the page’s sources and limitations.

Example and expected result

Scenario: recall sleep as requested, enter times and frequencies, then review component scores.
A self-assessment score does not diagnose a condition.

Capabilities and limits

  • Recall may be inaccurate; a single score cannot replace diagnosis.
  • Do not use this result alone to choose treatment or medication.

Troubleshooting

Check times across midnight and distinguish time in bed from actual sleep duration if scoring seems unexpected.
